Talkin' About Walkin': Officials Aim to Add More Local Sidewalks
Tinley Park trustees and committeemen chatted this past week about a longterm plan that will improve local "walkability." It won't happen overnight, they said, but it's part of the vision for the village.
Local officials want Tinley Park to be more walkable.
Adding sidewalks and bicycle paths within the village, as well as more bike racks to public places—the library, for instance—were all "walkability" tactics discussed Tuesday during a committee meeting, reports the Sun-Times Media.
The following are listed in village documents as the "primary goals" of the program:
- Reinforce connections between existing facilities.
- Create institutional connections.
- Increase active transportation opportunities.
- Use active transportation to create economic development opportunities.
- Maintain and create programs supporting active transportation.
- Maintain and create public police supporting active transportation.
"Planning staff ... will provide the Village of Tinley Park and its partners with the tools and guidance necessary to become an exemplary bicycle and pedestrian friendly community," board documents said.
The Active Transportation Plan is being coordinated with help from the Mayor's Advisory Panel on Wellness. The grant-funded group was created last summer.
Village planning director Amy Connolly said one of the main goals is to increase pedestrian safety at busy intersections such as 159th Street and Harlem Avenue. It also is meant to fill gaps and connect the village’s network of sidewalks, which end abruptly on some routes.
“Some of that has to do with the fact that these are old neighborhoods, and sidewalks weren’t required at the time,” Connolly said.
The village board is scheduled to discuss the plan in June.

I agree with you Carrie. Harlem from 163rd to 167th both sides. And 175th to 183rd, 183rd to 191st. Also the state reworked the intersection of 175th& Harlem... but the northbound Harlem to Westbound 175th street turning lane was NOT PAVED.It is terrible.

They need to be extended south of 167th Street. The seniors that live in Hanover Place have no way to walk to either CVS or Jewel! Did you ever watch an 80 year old gentleman pushing his grocery cart down the dirt path along Harlem Avenue. They are taking their lives in their hands. Come on Tinley---take a look!

Harlem Ave would be nice. But thats owned by the county, they should have to foot the bill. Matter of fact, i bet thats why it isin't paved already. I think we need a bike path from the 80th ave train station to the Oak Park ave train station with a pedestrian bridge over Harlem. That way you can give the train commuters an option to ride to the train or ride into the center of town from the "new" tinley side and give people in the center of town access to walk/bike to the library. Most of the land on the south side of the tracks is owned by the Nut Hut and they arent going to do anything with it anyway.

How about 183rd there on the westside of the street where that cross is standing
where that person got killed, they need a big side walk over there also well as harlem
also up and down the street over that so no one getLs hurt,
