D228 Students Attend SSC Publications Conference

On Friday, October 18, yearbook, newspaper and public relations intern students from Bremen, Tinley Park, Hillcrest and Oak Forest High Schools attended the South Suburban Conference (SSC) Publications Conference at Moraine Valley Community College.  The keynote speaker for the day was FOX Chicago Sports Anchor Lou Canellis. 

Canellis said that he took the SSC speaking event seriously because... “you are me a number of years ago.  I’m a south side kid; I’m going to give it to you straight!”  He then advised students to be passionate, get involved, do internships, and pursue everything.  He shared examples of the ups and downs of his career.  He said the ups were exciting and allowed him to form friendships with professional athletes, and the downs taught him to be humble.  Canellis then spent time answering student questions and taking pictures with students. 

Following the keynote presentation students attended workshop sessions designed to assist them with gathering and writing news stories, headlines and captions; sports reporting; blogging; and photography.  The sessions were provided by a number of presenters including:
