Dist. 228 Public Relations Internships Created

Business Professionals of America (BPA) is one of the work program classes offered by District 228.  This year, as part of their work section of the class, a group of students from each school: Bremen, Tinley Park, Hillcrest and Oak Forest High Schools were offered an opportunity to apply for an internship as the Public Relations Intern for their school or the District.  This year was the first year that BPA students had an opportunity to work alongside respected teachers.

A handful of individuals were chosen by their BPA teachers to start the application process.  In order to get the internship the students were interviewed by Dr. Kendall, the Superintendent for the District, and Ms. DeVos, the Community Relations Coordinator.  The interview consisted of an explanation of what is expected and then a series of questions to try to get to know each student.  After meeting with each of the students individually Dr. Kendall and Ms. DeVos chose one student for each school and one for the District.

Since this is the first time the internship has been run, the group of interns was able to contribute to the creation of their job description.  They determined that they would work with the webmasters to review the web sites and assist in writing press releases and taking pictures.  They will also work on special events and inform the Superintendent of upcoming activities in the school and in classrooms.

The interns have been working really hard to try to improve their school in any way they can.  Kaela Dennis, Oak Forest High School Public Relations Intern stated, “I'm having fun working with everyone and meeting new people that I would have never had contact with at my school if I wasn’t in the internship.  It’s been a very cool experience so far and I’m happy I can help.”

“This group of students has gotten an opportunity to experience the work that goes into improving their schools.  They are trying to expand on what is known about their school and trying to get more people involved,” said Jasmine Silva, District Public Relations Intern.
