District 228 Students Step Up To Vote

Illinois House Bill 226 went into effect on January 1 allowing 17-year-old citizens that will turn 18 years old by the November 4, 2014 General Election, the ability to register and vote in the March 18 Primary.  District 228 Social Studies Department Supervisor Colin Milton saw this as a learning opportunity for his students in Bremen, Tinley Park, Hillcrest and Oak Forest High Schools.

Milton targeted the week of February 3-7 for a registration event and distributed voter registration applications to Senior English teachers and Junior American History teachers.  Even though participation was optional, nearly 400 students registered to vote.  Milton said, “This opportunity teaches students about global civic responsibility.”
