SD228 Hosts STEM Competition

Bremen High School District 228 hosted the 2nd Annual STEM Competition at Tinley Park High School on May 9.  Eighty-five students from science and technology classes entered the competition after winning their individual building competitions.  The 2nd Annual STEM Competition included four events: Mousetrap Cars, CO2 Cars, Rocket Launching, and Trebuchet. Special guest judge was Dr. Anna Helwig, South Suburban College Dean of STEM Education.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education.  The skills and knowledge learned in each discipline are essential in the real world, and in how students learn most effectively.  STEM is an interdisciplinary and applied approach, that is coupled with hands-on, problem-based learning. By hosting a district competition, students have the opportunity to experience their hard work in a fun and engaging competition against students from all four district high schools. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that employment in occupations related to STEM are projected to grow to more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022.
