Tinley Park HS Diversity Club Celebrates Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, Tinley Park High School’s Seekers Diversity Club, run by Mrs. Selime Baftiri, provided a unique opportunity for students to observe and discuss the issue of race within society.  Any student who wished to participate, gathered in the Audion after school recently and were prompted by Mrs. Baftiri to consider the ideas of race and what it means within school, family, and society.  Mrs. Baftiri also discussed the movie they were about to watch and the language and issues they would see unfold.  The students were very emotionally moved while watching The Butler, a 2013 movie starring Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, a man who served as a butler for eight different Presidents at the White House.  The discussions and viewing were a success and the Seekers Diversity Club hopes to continue the discussion at future meetings.
