Families Flock to Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt

Parents, children brave bad weather to hunt for eggs and have their pictures taken with Mr. Cottontail.

Rain or shine, the show must go on. That could be the motto.

Despite miserable weather, the took place Friday with a higher turnout than last year.

“The first group of participants at 7:30 (p.m.) had approximately 250 kids hunting for eggs," said Dave Piejko, assistant coordinator for preschool, youth and special events. "It was a very good turnout, and the turnout this year was better than last year’s.”

Families came from across the suburbs to participate, as they do for many of Tinley Park’s activities. The Kuehl family, from Mokena, was glad to have the opportunity to participate in the Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt. Steve Kuehl said his family was going to be out of town around Easter and he wanted his kids, Michael and Emily, ages 5 and 8, respectively, to participate in an Easter egg hunt.

“Since we will miss the Mokena egg hunt, this was a great opportunity. Plus, the flashlight concept is a fantastic idea, and a really fun concept for the kids,” Kuehl said.

Hazel Crest resident Loretta Marcano, who brought her daughters, Carmen and Angela, ages 5 and 3, respectively, agreed that the flashlight concept is a great idea.

“Nobody else does anything else like this.  It is an original idea,” Marcano said.

Participants were allowed to find a maximum of five eggs hidden around . After finding the eggs, participants were to make their way inside the building to have their picture taken with the Easter Bunny, who made an early visit to Tinley Park that night.

Tinley Park resident Cody Krol, 4, was among those standing in line with his basket of eggs. This was the first egg hunt at the park district for Cody and his sister, 10-month-old Olivia, who attended with their mom, Stacy Krol.

“I hope there are lots of toys in my eggs,” Cody said.

Megan Lovett, of Orland Park, said she and her family enjoyed the hunt. Lovett was on hand with her daughter Alexis, 4, and niece Casey, 3.

“The events in Tinley Park are great. Plus, it makes it easier on families with the economy that some of them are free,” Lovett said.
