If '16 and Pregnant' Has Tinley Park Connection, Will You Watch?

The MTV show's upcoming local tie gained attention recently after the village stopped it from filming at the 80th Ave. Metra station. Does this give you a reason to tune in to the next season in 2014?

Mayor Ed Zabrocki first heard that MTV might be filming a local teen for its 16 and Pregnant show from Tinley Park's village manager.

Not an avid watcher of the show, Zabrocki had caught an episode of the show—which documents the lives of girls who fit the criteria set forth in the title—six or eight months ago when he was channel surfing.

"When the program started out, it was probably laudable," he said. "… [I] watched it, and I thought it glorified unwed mothers."

Because of that message, Zabrocki and the village asked MTV not to shoot any footage for the show at the 80th Avenue Metra station. The show's production complied, but the mayor pointed out that this doesn't stop them from filming at other locations that aren't owned by the village.

However, the show was not allowed to shoot at Andrew High School, where the subject, Maddy Godsey, attends school, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

An MTV spokeswoman for 16 and Pregnant would not comment on the show while it's in production, but other websites have reported that Maddy, who turned 17 last month, has been cast in the fifth season of the show.

An "official" Facebook fan page also has been set up for Maddy, claiming she will be featured during the next season of the show. Although the page states that it is being run by a fan and not Maddy, it does contain numerous ultrasound images of the baby and other personal photos, all of them with "Maddy Godsey Official" watermarks.

Zabrocki said his only concern with stopping the show from filming was the potential for the village drawing a frivolous lawsuit. Response about the decision, the mayor said, has been "98 percent positive."

"I would like to take a moment this morning to thank the Mayor of Tinley Park for not allowing the crew of MTV's 16 and pregnant to film in areas of our community," a post from reader Jenny Botica stated on Tinley Park Patch's Facebook page. "I myself was a teenage mother and the glorifying of this is completely ridiculous! The education of abstinence and birth control should be what MTV is teaching our youth!"

Asked if he would catch another episode of 16 and Pregnant given that it has a Tinley Park connection, Zabrocki said he might be curious because of the local tie, but he probably won't be watching.

"I couldn't even tell you what channel [number] it is," he said.

No date has been set for when the show's next season will air in 2014. But SPOILER ALERT: Maddy gave birth to a daughter Oct. 20, according to the Facebook page.

Yes, although I'm not a fan of the show I have watched it and formed an "educated" opinion that it doesn't glamorize teen pregnancy and serves a purpose so other teens understands the sacrifices, complexity and affect on the family dynamics. It also documents how the young teen fathers usually don't have the emotional maturity to meet the requirements of fatherhood. Mr Zs comments and actions conversely are based on ignorance and an out dated opinionated old school mentality. He used my tax dollars to fund that facility on 80th and quite frankly am offended by his actions and so should every other tax paying tinley park resident. The king of the fiefdom has spoken approach once again! i do agree they should keep the cameras out of schools so he got that right at least

"Educated" indeed. Unless you have experienced or have been affected by teenage parenting you truly have no idea. The show does not show the full extent of the true struggle. It's not exactly a news flash that young fathers are not in the child's life. Maybe in 16 years they will have an update show and then you will see how these children turned out. Then you can complain about your tax dollars because you will be funding their jail time.

I also was a teen mom (a long time ago) and I don't think it "glamorizes" teen moms at all!! I think it's silly not to let them film!! The show doesn't cause or endorse being a teen mom, it just shows what it's like to be one! My daughter watched it and she managed to make it through her teens without getting pregnant!!

How anyone in todays' world can be pregnant at 16 is pure ignorance and lack of parenting that I feel some of our parents of teens have. Parents today give their children way too much at an early age, don't parent and try to be their kids friends. Our teens and youth are spoiled beyond spoiled these days. The number of parents that allow their under 21 kids to drink openly at home is another problem. It's bad enough that 18-21 year old college students drink so much since many parents take the attitude, well I drank at that age, so what? 16 year olds drinking and having sex is NOT ok even in todays' society but it happens cuz their parents are too busy being their friends. BE A PARENT AND GIVE YOUR TEENS STRICTER RULES INSTEAD OF GIVING THEM THE LATEST I PHONE OR I PAD!!

I don't waste my time on garbage TV! All these programs do is glorify bad and immoral behavior! The more we promote this reality TV the more people will do to try to qualify! Take it off the air and see how many of these fools pull this! Her parents need a reality check!

I am confused by the Mayor's comment that the show "glorified unwed mothers" and hope it was taken out of context, instead referring to their age, not just marital status. Otherwise, I am not sure how that statement is relevant to the matter at hand.

Unless know her family directly, you have no business make assumptions on her parents. They are a good family, she is a teenage girl who made a mistake. We have no right to judge her seeing that it could happen to anyone in our families. As my mother once said, "Be careful of the word you speak because you will never know one day which ones you may have to eat."
Karen Way December 13, 2013 at 02:33 PM
It was a general comment about parents today....not specifically her parents....my children are grown with children conceived after marriage when they were in their late 20's.
Jenny December 13, 2013 at 04:21 PM
Actually her Mother was to busy with her new husband and being pregnant herself. Aunt and niece are a few months apart.

Jenny, that happened to a friend of mine. Bad divorce/new husband and I believe the daughter got pregnant on purpose for attention!! Now she has attention for the next 18 years!!

I am an old woman of 50 and have watched 16 & pregnant more times then I would care to admit. I have also watch the sequels on what happens after the babies arrive on Teen Mom. Seemingly, you say they do not glorify these girls in the situation which I do not agree with you at all. These girls are on t.v. sometimes 3-4 days a week. They also get paid to be on the shows. They make appearances to rather large crowds and all the young ones know who they are and everyone in their lives. The one young girl who the baby never met the father, he was killed in the military is now modeling and possibly nude in a men's magazine gross to some but no different than most tv stars. While we are adults with families, we see all the horrible things that go on....to a 15-16 year old they only see the glamor in this show. The do realize the boy is no longer around and some girls ended up in jail but they just do not grasp how horrible the situation actually is. So yes, from an adult standpoint it's not so glorified but I really feel that the teens do no perceive it in the same manner. There are lots of stories or rumors about this young girl which may or may not be true. Truth be told she made some irreversible choices but she is on t.v. Think about it, how many people did you know on t.v. when you were young...good bad or indifferent. I'm glad they did not film in the school, just not sure what difference it makes for them to be in public places. If they keep you on the show, your family is obviously filled with a bunch of chaos (lack of a better word) or you would be uninteresting and no one would watch. If you think the family will be better off by doing the show...it doesn't stand true for those who have already been the subjects of the show. I would question the parenting skills of anyone that would involve their family to this type of situation being on t.v.

I agree w jenny 100% and yes I have too watched this show and another and to be honest the only reason I did was because the one couple put thier baby up for adoption!!! Imagion that!!! Jenny put her WHOLE life on the side and didnt have help from dad, her parents or a tv show!!! She busted her butt for her child! She not only was a ten mom she has a child with a disability !!! I'm a child if a teen mother and was put up for adoption!!!! The best thing she did!!! I think this glorifies teens and having babies!!!!

Hey jenny / angel crapper and all you other miserable know it all ball busters I was a teen parent and married today to the same woman with 4 wonderful college educated grown adult children that haven't spent a second in jail If a teen watches the show and believes its cute or cool to be a pregnant teen, they have some serious issues that needs to be immediately addressed by their parents and most likely a trained mental health professional. Use your remote and change the channel and let everyone live their imperfect lives while your mastery of life's perfections is admired in awe
Jenny December 16, 2013 at 04:39 AM
Tony, you lived in a time when you had to marry your pregnant girlfriend. We are referring to all the kids being raised by people that are more concerned with being their kids friend over being their parent. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But because your views are dated does not make me a "ball buster". Also, I appreciate you acknowledging my "mastery of life's perfection" considering probably only 1% of today's teenage moms would have the strength and maturity to raise 2 Children, one with special needs as the other is Collage bound with nearly straight A's. And they come from a single parent house hold. So please do be in awe, and Thankful they are a productive part of society and not upon the growing numbers of misguided youth.
Tony December 16, 2013 at 07:32 AM
Jenny...and therein lies the problem...a false sense of grandiosity and unfounded highly opinionated negativity of all others. Appreciate all that you have and remember the pitcher of life is half full or half empty in each persons life. Work at seeing the half full as you seem to be very angry and or frustrated with the life you have chosen and take it out on today's youth...and quite a few others I suspect My opinion is outdated? Yours sounds to be coming from the cranky lady hollering at all the kids that step on your lawn !
Jenny December 16, 2013 at 08:09 AM
Tony, you couldn't be more farther from the truth. You continual ignorance and name calling reads loud and clear to your character, Sir. If you were as truly educated as you claim to be you would have noticed my comment was sarcastic and poking fun of your false seance in self and apparent god complex. I will no longer respond to anything further you post. Good day Sir.

I believe everyone has their own opinion. No one is bashing anyone's family or anything. Tony I'm sorry you feel that way. I think what everyone is saying is that they(If they want "reality" tv) should follow a 16 yr old who TRUELY has to busy their butt. You are one of the lucky FEW who got married and has happy healthy children because of that you should feel thankful. I work with a population of single teen/young mothers and fathers (yes some families are married) with children w developmental delays and or disabilities some because mom and dad were so young and not completely developed themselves. The divorce rate is so high that your case is very far and few between so in that case your lucky not everyone is so lucky. I would take time and be thankful for what you have.
Tony December 16, 2013 at 07:53 PM
Sorry jenny didn't think it was all that offensive. Just differing opinions. Good health and continued happiness thru 2014 to you and your family !
