Moms and Sons Rock at Park District Sock Hop

The yearly event brought together moms and their little boys for a night of fun and dancing.

It was another night for most, but for moms and sons it was date night as they attended the Tinley Park District’s annual Mother-Son Sock Hop on Friday.

Stacey Green, Tinley Park District coordinator for youth, preschool, and special events, said the Mother-Son Sock Hop is popular, but doesn’t bring in as many guests as the Father-Daughter Valentines Day Dance.

“I usually allow for only a 100 people and then put others on a waiting list; however, this year we were right at 100 people. And because we have a smaller crowd, we only use one of the gyms,” Green said.

As moms and sons posed in front of a jukebox back for photos by Worth-based Killoran Photography, other moms and sons headed to the dance floor, but not before they stopped at the check-in table where moms received a flower and boys received a blow-up guitar. Snacks, punch music and games were also provided.

“This is our first time at the dance,” said Jill Warszalek, who came with her 4-year-old son Joshua. “And we are having a really nice time.”

Joshua said he likes hanging out with his mom.

“My mom always plays with me and makes yummy cookies for me,” Joshua said.

Another first-time group was 3 year old Liam Johnson and his mom, Maureen Johnson.

“It is a really great idea for moms and sons. It gives us a chance to hang out together,” Maureen Johnson said.

Liam wanted to add that his mom is the best because she reads him stories.

“I love her!” Liam said.

Christin Mucha and her 5-year-old son Zachary Mucha have been coming to the Mother-Son Sock Hop for the last couple of years. Christin Mucha said they were having a great time as Zachary jammed out on his new guitar (provided by the park district).

Colin Ladd, 3, and his mom Christie Ladd were having lots of fun.

“This is our second time coming to the dance. It’s a special day for us,” Christie Ladd said. “Colin kept saying all week, ‘I’m taking Mommy on a date.’”

Colin said he likes being with his mom because they cook together and she reads him stories. Also in agreement to how nice of an even this is was Anne Vanderberg and her son Adam Vanderberg, 7.

“It’s a great way to spend time with your son,” Anne Vanderberg said.

“I love my mom. She always buys me treats like fruit roll-ups,” Adam Vangerberg said.

As the night ended and moms and sons celebrated good times and slid to the “Electric Slide”, the Tinley Park District had made another lasting memory for little boys and their moms.
