Password: Purple

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Crisis Center for South Suburbia (CCSS) is partnering with local businesses on a week-long awareness campaign culminating in a free concert event on Saturday, October 13 from 3:00-5:00 pm in Zabrocki Plaza, located at 173rd Place and Oak Park Avenue in Tinley Park. The Password: Purple campaign will draw attention to the issues of domestic violence and the resources and services available to the community through CCSS.

Several businesses have signed on to sponsor the event including Durbin’s, Classy Flowers, All Purpose Printing, and the Tinley Park Farmer’s Market. Several other businesses have offered their support by putting up posters, sharing information with their customers, and distributing invitations to attend the event.

The free concert will feature performances by American Idol finalist Gina Glocksen, and the Andrew High School Bel Conto Choir. The event also includes a candle lighting ceremony and vigil. The vigil pays tribute to survivors of domestic violence and honors those who have lost their lives to abuse. All community residents are invited to attend the free event. For more information please contact Kerri at (708) 429-7255, ext. 126,

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month which evolved from the "Day of Unity" that started in October 1981. The idea was conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, with an intent to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The activities conducted were as varied and diverse as the program sponsors but had common themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence. In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. The tradition continues today as we honor, remember and come together to serve those in need.

The Crisis Center for South Suburbia’s mission is to provide emergency shelter and other essential services for individuals and families victimized by domestic violence and address the societal issues that contribute to domestic violence.
