So You Think You Can Pole Dance? Think Again

Patch Editor Joe Vince put down his notebook and put on his boogie shoes at last weekend's Midwest Pole Dancing Convention to see if he was any good at the sport. Watch and decide if he has a new career.

Among some traditionally trained journalists, one of the cardinal rules of the profession is to never become part of the story.

Of course, writers like George Plimpton, Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe turned the experience of reporting on a story into the story.

It was in that spirit that I decided to be a little more participatory while covering the Midwest Pole Dancing Convention in Tinley Park last weekend. Thanks to a few impromptu lessons from organizer Mary Ellyn Weissman and a stunning lack of foresight on my part, I tried my hand at pole dancing.

How did I do? For the sake of comparison, I compiled the footage of my attempts and combined it with some of the performances from the convention and competition. Let's just say my boss didn't have to worry about my letter of resignation sitting in his inbox the next day.
