What’s New in D230’s Daily Schedule?

The day may start earlier, but students at Sandburg, Stagg and Andrew have opportunities during the school day to get additional help in areas they are struggling or if they are interested in enrichment.

Consolidated High School District 230’s daily schedule got an adjustment for the 2013-2014 school year with an earlier start.

The school day’s first hour now begins at 8 a.m. for Carl Sandburg, Amos Alonzo Stagg and Victor J. Andrew high schools. The reason for an earlier start is to make room for new periods during the day that can be used as study hall, to help students improve in struggling areas and to work on skills that likely aren’t covered in class but are needed.

Two days a week, students attend an advisory period for 25 minutes. The district plans to keep the same students and teacher together throughout their four years in school. The advisory will focus on skills needed outside of the classroom, including use of digital and social media, time management and decision making.

For another two days a week, students will be using that period for more personalized work. They will be assigned for help in subjects where they aren’t performing as well, or for enrichment, depending on how they’ve been assessed. Peer tutors, counselors and support staff will be available during these periods, as will college and career preparation activities, according to the school district.

Freshmen and sophomores will have their lunch periods split with about 20 minutes for lunch and then another 20 minutes for a study hall, while juniors and seniors will have the full period for lunch. Freshmen and sophomores will also have access to help in different subjects during the study hour. The zero hour period begins about 5 minutes earlier at 7 a.m. instead of 7:05 a.m.

For students starting their day at the 8 a.m. first hour, the earliest bus routes start at 7 a.m. Routes for those taking zero hour start at 6 a.m., according to D230 spokesperson Carla Erdey.

“We’ll monitor that to see how it goes in the first few weeks and make any adjustments,” Erdey said. “That’s typical practice. With a quarter of students graduated and a new quarter coming in, routes change depending on where they come from.”
