Police Holding 'Person of Interest' in Tinley Park Fatal Hit-and-Run

Charges are pending against a suspect in the Wednesday night crash that killed a man in his early 60s who was visiting from India, police said.

Police have a 22-year-old man in custody and expect charges to be filed soon in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a man visiting from India Wednesday night.
"We have a person of interest that we're talking to," said Cmdr. Pat McCain of the Tinley Park Police Department. "Charges are pending." He expects the charges to be approved later today or Friday. 

Tinley Park's Major Crash Unit is investigating.
Rajendrakumar Shah, a 61-year-old man from India, was visiting people in Tinley Park, according to authorities. Police said he was killed after being struck at about 9:30 p.m. by a pickup truck while attempting to cross 159th Street.
Shah was from Vapi, India, and served as that municipality's first president in 1995, according to the Times of India. He also was international director (India) of Jain International Trade Organization.

Shah, who was in the United States to attend his nephew's wedding, turned 61 on Wednesday, the report added. He is survived by his wife and three sons.

A man in his 60s was killed Wednesday night near the intersection of 159th Street and 80th Avenue in an apparent hit-and-run incident, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office and other reports.

The medical examiner's office confirmed the fatal hit-and-run Thursday morning but was not releasing information about the victim because the family had not been notified.

Citing the medical examiner's office, a Sun-Times Media report said the victim was a 61-year-old man who was visiting from India and staying with family in Tinley Park.

The man was struck by a pickup truck as he was crossing at 159th and 80th, the Sun-Times report stated. He was pronounced dead at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at Palos Community Hospital, the report added.
