Softball: Tinley Park Falls to Defending 3A Champs in Semifinals

Glenbard South defeated the Titans, 5-1, in the state semifinals Friday. Tinley will play in the third-place game Saturday.

Tinley Park High School was able to go toe to toe with Glenbard South for four innings, but the defending 3A softball champs proved to be too much for the Titans, who lost 5-1 in the state semifinal Friday afternoon at Eastside Centre in East Peoria.

The Titans play Sterling at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Class 3A third-place game.

After three innings, Tinley Park and Glenbard South were tied, 1-1. But Glenbard South senior Hannah Taylor, with 3 RBI, provided the offense that pushed the Raiders ahead and kept them ahead in two separate at bats.

Taylor singled in a run in the 4th inning, putting Glenbard South up, 2-1. Then in the top of the 6th inning, Taylor cracked a 2-run home run—only her second of the season—to widen the gap, 4-1.

The Titans had opportunities in the 5th and 6th innings with runners in scoring position and only one out. But Tinley Park wasn't able to get anyone to cross the plate.

Tinley Park's sole run came from an unlikely play in the 1st inning. Senior Alyssa Gunther scored from third base when junior Samantha Alberto was caught in a rundown between first and second.

This was the first time Tinley's softball program has made it to the state semifinals. Glenbard South defeated Marengo in 2012 to win the Class 3A softball championship.
