Business Comings & Goings: Chamberlain College of Nursing Opens Tinley Campus

Firehouse Subs holds grand opening • Blackberry's reopens in Tinley • Vera Bradley eyes Orland store.

Tinley Park has become a hot spot for college campuses even with the impending demise of Sanford-Brown College.

Chamberlain College of Nursing is the latest institution of higher education to settle in Tinley Park at 18624 W. Creek Drive in the same building at DeVry University.

The Tinley location is the 13th campus for the school, which has been training nurses for 122 years.

The campus will offer bachelor of science of nursing degrees and offers year-round study. Students could earn degrees in three years.

The college features nursing skill labs, a coronary care unit, an obstetrics area, pediatric beds, two general skills labs and a health assessment lab.

Chamberlain will be holding open houses for prospective students from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, and again on Thursday, March 7.

Classes will start on May 6.

Besides DeVry, Tinley also is home to a Lewis University campus, a Moraine Valley campus, a Fox College vet tech campus, Keller Graduate School of Management campus, an Illinois Institute of Art campus and several beauty and hair styling campuses.

The Sanford-Brown campus is expected to close by the end of the year.

Grand opening weekend for Firehouse Subs

Firehouse Subs at 15892 S. LaGrange Road in Orland Park is holding its grand opening weekend from March 1-4 that will culminate with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. March 4.

Events include a visit from the Orland Fire Protection District from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 2 and other events.

Blackberry’s Open Again in Tinley

Blackberry’s Pancake House at 9536 W. 179th St. has reopened after being closed for two weeks. The popular eatery is back to business as usual and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. An employee said the restaurant was closed pending a sale but that the deal fell through.

Vera Bradley coming to Orland Square

Vera Bradley, a retailer that specializes in women’s bags and accessories is planning a new 2,000-square-foot store at Orland Square Mall in Orland Park.

The store would be the chain’s fifth in the Chicago area but the first in the Southland.

The project has an estimated cost of $150,000.

The store is scheduled to open around spring and will be located next to Arden B.

Home Improvement & Garden Show coming

The spring Home Improvement and Garden Show is coming to the Tinley Park Convention Center from March 1-3.

Show hours are 4-8 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

This is billed as the largest home improvement show in the Southland.  

Homeowners looking to find home improvement ideas, contractors, product manufacturers and inspiration will find nearly 200 exhibitors all under one roof.

Admission is $6 for adults.

Orland mayor to deliver annual message

Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin will deliver his State of the Village Address at the Orland Park Area Chamber of Commerce monthly membership meeting from 7:45 a.m.-9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at Silver Lake Country Club, 14700 S. 82nd Avenue.

Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

Tinley to host business seminar

The Illinois Small Business Development Center will host a seminar on Starting a Business from 9-11:30 a.m. Feb. 27 in the Kallsen Center of the Tinley Park Village Hall, 16250 S. Oak Park Ave.

Marathon station opens in Orland

An independently owned Marathon gas station finally opened at 15301 S. Harlem Ave. in Orland Park.

The station used to be a Speedway gas station and a Super America station before that.

The station last summer underwent an extensive remodeling.

Hot dog shop closes in Tinley

Dickie’s Dogs closed recently at 8021 W. 183rd St. in Tinley Park. The business had been listed for sale or take over lease.

Bench sponsorships still available

Sponsorships are still available for the 2013 Benches on the Avenue Fairy Tale Festival.

Benches will be on display from mid-May through Oct. 1, after which the sponsor will take possession of the bench.

Introductory sponsorships are available through March 11; the price increases thereafter.

Talented local artists will create vibrant, colorful, 3-D designs based on classic stories of magical and imaginary beings and lands where characters and objects are transformed before one's very eyes.

Palos Hospital to open new pavilion

Palos Community Hospital is inviting members of the Orland Park, Palos and Homer Township chambers of commerce to a reception from 4-7 p.m. Feb. 28 celebrating the opening of the new Hospitaller Pavilion at its Palos Heights campus at 12251 S. 80th Avenue.

There will be tours of the new pavilion including its patient rooms, intensive care unit, advanced operating suites and Center for Short Stay Care.
