Representatives from the department store announced last week that they'll be hiring 40,000 workers to help with the increased hustle and bustle during the holidays, according to a news release. Among that total are about 2,500 seasonal positions at distribution centers.

The number of workers to be hired is up 50 percent from those signed on in 2010 for similar positions, according to the news release, which cites store growth in 2011 as a factor.

Seasonal workers can spend anywhere from a few hours to more than 20 hours on the job each week, the release said. Typical duties include unloading trucks, processing freight, stocking stores and manning cash registers. Hiring began this month, and most jobs will be filled by mid-November.

There are currently 1,127 Kohl's stores in 49 states. About 35 positions per store are to be filled, though that number may vary with the needs of each location, the release said.
