Pete’s Fresh Market May Replace Orland Dominick’s – In a Few Years

As the final days wind down for the , village officials are hopeful the building will remain a food store.

“We do believe a grocery store will reopen there,” said Karie Friling, director of development services. “But no formal applications have been filed with the village.”

It may be some time before the village knows what will happen with the building, which has been owned since 2008 by Pete’s Fresh Market.

“It’s the wrong time now to open a store there,” said Charlie Poulakis, a spokesman for Pete’s Fresh Market, which is based on Chicago’s Southwest Side.

Pete’s Fresh Market operates eight grocery stores and has two more in the works in Oakbrook Terrace and Chicago. The closest stores to Orland Park are in Evergreen Park and Calumet City. Interestingly, the Calumet City store is in a former Dominick’s store that was converted a few years ago.

Poulakis said Pete’s Fresh Market won’t do anything with the Orland Park building until after a planned widening of LaGrange Road from 131st Street to 179th Street is completed. The project is expected to start next summer and run through 2013.

“We’re going to wait for them to finish construction on LaGrange before we decide what to do with the building,” Poulakis said. He added that Pete’s Fresh Market has a deal with the state to store construction equipment in the Dominick’s parking lot while the road project is under way.

He said Pete’s Fresh Market is leaning toward opening in that location.

“That’s why we bought the building,” he said. “But it depends on how things go.”

The Dominick’s store will close at midnight Sunday, if not sooner. A manager on Thursday said inventory was running out and the store may close before Sunday.
