Building Owner Matches Donation in Honor of Lane Bryant Shooting Victims

T.J. Maxx opened in its new location in Brookside Marketplace Thursday, in the former home of Lane Bryant. The owner of the shopping center will match the store's $10K donation to charity, in honor of 5 women slain there in 2008.

The owner of Brookside Marketplace, DDR Corp., will match a $10,000 donation from T.J. Maxx to Together We Cope, in remembrance of the five women killed in the 2008 Lane Bryant shooting.

As the doors opened Nov. 7 in the building where the shooting occurred, the property owner announced it will pony up $10,000 to the charity, in memory of victims Connie R. Woolfolk of Flossmoor; Sarah T. Szafranski of Oak Forest; Carrie Hudek Chiuso of Frankfort, Rhoda McFarland of Joliet, and Jennifer L. Bishop, 34, of South Bend, Ind.

“DDR will be making a $10,000 contribution, in addition to TJ Maxx's donation, to the Together We Cope organization in memory of the families who were affected by this tragedy," according to a company spokesperson.

The store relocated from its previous Tinley Park home, at 16025 S. Harlem Ave. to the space near the intersection of 191st and Harlem Avenue. The store is now open, and will remain open until 10 p.m. Thursday. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays.

Some say the store's dark past may deter them from shopping there. Others say it's time for a fresh start for the space.

"They changed the building so much that it is totally different," wrote commenter Meghan Elaine. "The donation is very generous! Sadly, if we tore down every place that has be a location for a terrible event, we would constantly be rebuilding."

The events of that day still feel fresh to some, even almost 6 years later.

"I will not be shopping there," wrote commenter Sue Slansky. "It took me a long time, 3 1/2 years to go into that shopping area. Safety is not the issue, just feel very uncomfortable knowing those woman were murdered there."

TJX Cos., which owns T.J. Maxx, also operates a HomeGoods store at Brookside Marketplace. T.J. Maxx boasts a selection of 16,000 brands in clothing, accessories, home decor, beauty items, pet accessories, toys and more.

The fresh name will be a welcome addition to a part of Brookside that has struggled since a gunman shot and killed the five women during a robbery gone awry Feb. 2, 2008. The gunman is still at large.
