-------------------

Whether in the form of a cone, cup, sundae or float, everyone loves ice cream.

The icy cold treat is especially popular during the summer months, providing a temporary relief from what can sometimes be scorching temperatures. It's a reward for good behavior, a treat following a relaxing meal or an annual stop along the local parade route.

So we want to know—What's your preferred spot in the Southland is to indulge? There's no doubt that we have a repertoire of deliciously sweet options in Orland Park, , Oak Forest, Palos, Chicago HeightsHomewood-Flossmoor, Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn, Frankfort, New Lenox and Mokena

Does your favorite ice cream parlor specialize in variety? Let you make your own flavors? Have the best frozen custard? It's all yummy so we want to know what makes it THE BEST.

Nominate your favorite ice cream hotspot by telling us in the comments. Here are a few suggestions; however, they STILL NEED TO BE NOMINATED to be included in the poll! As parlors, restaurants or shops are nominated, they'll be added to the list and bolded.

  •  in Palos Park
  •  in Tinley Park
  •  in Orland Park
  • in Chicago Heights

We will accept nominations through July 9.

I've already put in my two cents about liking Two Sister's cinnamon bun sundae, but that's not going to stop me from putting in two more. As my late mother used to say - and she worked at Prince Castle Ice Cream for many years - frozen custard and ice cream are not the same thing. Real ice cream is what you get from Plush Horse, Baskin-Robbins, Rainbow Cone, etc. Frozen custard is does not even qualify as real ice cream. So if we want to get technical here, there should actually be two separate contests - one for favorite ice cream and one for favorite frozen custard. Personally, I prefer my sundaes to be made with frozen custard, but like my cones with the real deal. Not that anybody cares. Just my two cents. What ever you like - ENJOY! - and the heck with the calories.

Withhout a doubt, it is the Plush Horse in Palos, the icecream is still home made. It is one of my favorite childhood memories of my dad taking me there for icecream. Now I take my grandson and the icecream is still the best !

Diana June 27, 2012 at 10:11 pm
Sorry you had a bad experience at Plush Horse Freddie...I've lived here 26 years and never had anyone there mess up an order and we go with a lot of family quite often...maybe you should give it another chance...you can't beat the homemade ice cream :)
Cindy June 28, 2012 at 12:29 pm
Plush Horse in Palos is my pick..been going there since I was a kid and now I take my daughter there even though it takes us a half hour to drive there.
Jamie Paicely June 28, 2012 at 02:22 pm
Zarlengo's is in Chicago Heights, off of Joe Orr Road. It is soooo good!
Colleen McAbee June 28, 2012 at 02:38 pm

I find it hard to believe that not one person has mentioned Oberweis. I believe that they have the best ice cream and then second would be Cupid in Orland. Plush Horse I believe is very over rated.
Deb Hartung July 4, 2012 at 02:57 pm
I love Mitchell's too!!!
babyboomer July 7, 2012 at 10:25 am

I may live 2 blocks down from Jack Frost in Oak Forest (which is excellent by the way) but I was born and raised in Chicago Heights. So my vote goes to ZARLENGO'S!!!

Southside Native July 9, 2012 at 02:55 pm
Plush horse...
babyboomer July 9, 2012 at 02:56 pm
Zarlenga's is on Joe Orr Road & Ashland, just east of Marian Catholic HS. Try the Arctic Blast(I think that's what its called) a combo of anyflavor Italian ice and soft serve ice cream. Guaranteed to give you brain freeze, LOL!!
babyboomer July 9, 2012 at 02:59 pm
Forget Dairy Queen in Homewood, their portions get smaller every year and their prices go up!!
Sara July 9, 2012 at 05:03 pm
Plush horse, hands down!

Turns out it was a minor crash, according to state police. No one was injured enough to require aRead More trip in an ambulance. Two cars were involved in the collision, which happened at about 2 p.m.
Local Citizen June 18, 2013 at 02:01 pm
I'd also contact whichever bank has this in foreclosure. If they're the legal owners, then they'reRead More responsible. Maybe the threat of a lawsuit if someone gets sick or injured might prompt them to take action.
Concerned Citizen June 18, 2013 at 02:31 pm
The problem is that nobody knows or can locate the bank who owns this property. I have contacted aRead More friend of mine whom is a realtor and there saying it's owned by HUD! Well good luck getting in touch with them!
Concerned Citizen June 18, 2013 at 05:47 pm
Well I just ran into an inspector sent by the bank who entered the property and said that the coinsRead More have eaten through the ceiling of he living room! I knew it!!!
MM June 16, 2013 at 01:58 pm
How are those cords that you pull, are they all stretched out?
A June 18, 2013 at 12:00 pm
no they are like new, it was barely used
Marni June 14, 2013 at 07:57 am
We too live in Parkside and I couldn't agree with you more! I love your sign! I have a three yearRead More old and I refuse to let him play on the last 15 feet of the driveway due to the speeding cars. Maybe a speed bump?!
dalygirl June 16, 2013 at 09:25 am
We've looked into a speed bump too. Make yourself a sign, call the Tinley Police and ask for theRead More electronic monitoring sign, call the village and complain, and be pro-active. Someone from the village saw my sign and has informed me that the village will be putting up speed limit signs and caution - kids playing signs this week. Good luck!!
