D146's Fulton School's Student Council Proves You Are Never Too Young to Make A Difference

School District 146's Fulton School in Tinley Park- Student Council assembles care packages for troops overseas.

School District 146’s Fulton School has many outstanding activities and clubs for students to get involved in at school.  One of their many valued activities for students is Student Council, a service-oriented activity for students in grades 3-5 which is co-sponsored by teachers Colette Emmick and Sara Jozwik.

Each month Fulton’s Student Council collaborates on a service project to focus on.  The goal of the projects is to teach students to support different causes, and get them to understand that they too can make a difference in the world.  February’s project for the Student Council was to show support for the troops.  The students handwrote letters and collected items to make care packages for this service project.  They tried to fill the requests of the soldiers with items on their lists.

Fulton’s Student Council collected many items including dental care items, toiletries, mints and gum, books and magazines and other miscellaneous items that could be used by service members serving overseas.  They put the collected items, along with letters and pictures, into packages for delivery. Once the packages were done, the boxes were brought over to the Tinley Park Village Hall who graciously sent them out.

Colette Emmick, club co-sponsor is very proud of the students and the generous spirit of the Fulton community, “This is my second year co-sponsoring Student Council, and I continue to be amazed by the thoughtfulness and generosity of the students and the Fulton Family.  We do our best to try to make a difference in our school and the community.  The decision to make care packages was just a small representation of the types of students that we have at Fulton.  Earlier in the year, Student Council collected back to school items for families within the district that might need them, in November they collected food for the Tinley Park Food Pantry.  The students truly care about people and they think both locally and globally when it comes to projects.  They are learning that their decisions can have a positive impact. I feel very lucky to be involved with this club and these amazing students.”
