Holocaust Survivor Speaks to D146's CMS 8th Graders
Holocaust survivor, Mr. George Levy Mueller, spoke to D146's CMS 8th graders about his story of survival in the 1930's and 40's.
George Levy Mueller, a Holocaust survivor, spoke Monday, April 29 with students at D146’s Central Middle School students regarding his traumatic childhood experiences when growing up in Germany in the 1930’s, during World War II.
Mr. Mueller, now age 82 and a retired pharmacist, spoke honestly when he told his stories about the wartime, the concentration camps, the scarcity of food, the diseases and the devastation of losing his father and his mother. He told the audience, made up of all 8th graders and teachers, about how his childhood one day changed at the age of 8 years old (1938).
He grew up a normal child of the 30's, lots of friends, played soccer, wonderful neighbors, only to have it all taken away by Nazi Germany. He was being ostracized because he was Jewish. He began the story at the time his father was returned to his family after spending months at a concentration camp, only to witness him die upon return from illness. He was separated from his mother at the tender age of 9, sent away to Holland with his sister. His last memory of his mother was her waving goodbye to them as the train pulled away from the station. His story was riveting, yet you could feel his sense of guilt of things that he had to deal with from his past.
