Memorial School Cancellation Due To Power/Water Outage

D146 Cancels Memorial School Classes After Loss of Water and Power

Memorial School was closed on Thursday, March 7th, due to a power and water loss.  At approximately 2am on Thursday morning, a water outage occurred affecting the school. Public Works attempted to repair the water issue and have it repaired prior to school starting, but hit an electrical main. The loss of power occurred around the same time that buses were en route picking up students for school. The district was informed that it would be closer to midnight before all damages are repaired. Without water and electricity in the building that means no fire sprinkler protection, working bathroom facilities, heat, phones, nor lights.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick said, “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause the parents but this was an emergency decision made as a matter of safety for our students and staff.  There was no immediate danger to anyone, but clearly school cannot take place under these conditions. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of our Memorial families.”

Parents who transported their students to Memorial were informed of the closing as they arrived.  The buses were met by school staff, and students were taken into the school.  An emergency phone call was launched as soon as the decision to close was made.  Parents of bus riders were asked to pick up their students at Memorial School.  All phone calls for Memorial were routed to the Administration Center to speak with concerned parents.  Dr. Stawick added, “Mr. Donovan and the staff at Memorial did a truly exceptional job.  They handled the situation in a calm and efficient manner.”  All students were picked up from Memorial by 10:30am, and the school expects to be open and fully operational by tomorrow, Friday, March 8th.
