D146’s Memorial School Celebrates Grandparent’s Day

Preschoolers through fifth graders at Memorial had special visitors on Friday, April 25. Memorial School in District 146 celebrated Grandparent’s Day. The school has celebrated the day for the past 25 years. Principal Mike Donovan said, “ Everyone truly looks forward to this day.  It’s become a tradition. Students invite their grandparent, or significant adult, to school.  The grandparents enjoy a special assembly just for them.  It is a showcase of poems and songs, and highlights the appreciation for their grandparents, all performed by our students. Following the assembly students invited their grandparents back to their classroom.  “Our students show the guests their desks, their work, and then head off to the Book Fair together to browse and buy books together.”

The special day is a PTA sponsored event.  Mr. Donovan said, “Our Memorial PTA is fantastic. They provided refreshments and snacks for our honored guests, as well as provided parking assistance.  They always make this day exceptional.  This is the day that celebrates the relationship and the role that grandparents play in the lives of our students. Our students truly love this day, but our grandparents treasure it.”
