School District 146’s Fierke Education Center in Oak Forest, IL, hosted its 4th Annual Fine Arts Showcase in the evening of Tuesday, April 23. The event, which is designed to spotlight the artistic talents of the students, was well-attended by over 100 visitors including students, parents, teachers and Fierke Principal Mark French.
The big night kicked-off with a live chorus performance from students, directed by longtime music teacher, Mrs. Hill, and co-directed by Mrs. Snyder. Attendees were also treated to a building-wide student art display constructed by the talented art teacher, Ms. Jennifer Marx. The display showcased work from every student in grades 1-5. Ms. Marx said, “We have such amazing talents at Fierke. We enjoy being able to showcase what they are capable of doing. From artwork to singing, our Fierke students put themselves out there. This night is for them, and about them. Their families should be proud.”
In the school’s Media Center, guests stayed to view a videotaped montage of the students’ (grades 1-5) music performances under the direction of the music teacher.
Students and families who attended the celebratory evening were invited to take part in two different art stations, with an assist from members of the Fierke Art Club. This gave the young students a chance to interact with the public and give them hands-on direction in the arts. Ms. Marx said, “The students enjoy working together and helping others create art. This gives them a chance to teach their skills to others.”
Each family took home a summary of the learning standards for art and music. Mr. French was extremely grateful, “Thanks to Ms. Marx, Mrs. Hill and Mrs. Snyder for organizing and hosting an enjoyable evening dedicated to arts education. It was great to see families having a fun time. They were mingling and laughing together. It’s just a really fun family event.”
