"Kruse Incorporated" Club Promotes Work Ethic

Students at School District 146’s Kruse Education Center who participate in the after school club “Kruse Incorporated” take their job very seriously.  The club, designed to teach students responsibility and to think independently, was the creation of Jennifer Smola and Paula Bravo, both Kruse educators.  They got the idea after attending a workshop for teachers.

Ms. Smola said, “We have 9-15 students participating each quarter. Because we have such a large number of applications for participation each year, the members change at the end of the term, giving more Kruse students opportunity to be a part of the club.”

“Kruse Incorporated” teaches responsibility to the students. Each student member is assigned a “job”. The opportunities that the students are assigned range from Media Center assistant, collecting lunch bins,  birthday manager, book collector, and technology assistant.  “Being on time, good role models, manners, importance of consistency of doing their job and doing the job well, these are all important things everyone should practice, and we take these seriously in the club. To show the importance of it all, we have students “apply” for the open positions, and we match them to the best job.”  The assigned positions are usually performed before school one day every other week, with a few jobs performed during the daytime.

Current group members were asked about the club specifically and what they like most. Student Danya Latif said, “I am Media Center Assistant and book collector, and I love helping people.  I like helping Mrs. Hazuka and Mrs. Krusinksi”. Jenna Abed chimed in “It feels good to help Mrs. Hazuka and Mrs. Krusinksi shelve books”. Hailey Morsovillo said that her reason for participating is simply because, “I think it is fun when you get to help out teachers!”

Now in its 2nd year, the student club runs from October 1 through the end of May. The club is open to students in grades 1-5 with a maximum limit of 20 students.  Kruse parents seeking additional information, please contact jsmola@district146.org.
