Andrew HS offers collage of co-curriculars for students to get involved

Last year, Andrew High School proudly recorded an impressive 80% of its student population who were involved in clubs and athletics.  And the school is hoping to increase that number this year. Here’s a snapshot of what is already happening at Andrew at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year.

Last year, Special Olympics had a State Champion in Bocce Ball, a silver medal in the 100M Walk, and a  5th Place finish in the 100M Run at this year’s state games held this past June. They are already gearing up for the basketball season, which begins in October!

Bonjour from French Club, which has already begun its annual after school activities.  Members dined at La Crêpe Bistro in September and decorated windows in the building for homecoming week with a Parisian theme. Meetings are every other Wednesday at 3:35 p.m. in room 313.  Join us and explore French-speaking cultures around the globe.

The Hangout Club is back for another year at Andrew High School in hopes of getting more students involved in social events.  The Hangout promotes new friendships and relationships in a structured environment as students participate in a variety of social activities. The hangout is a place to meet new friends and celebrate each others’ differences and special abilities. Events take place both in the evenings and after school. They will include things like participating in high school events, seasonal parties, open gym, attending Andrew sporting events, movies, bowling, and other recreational activities.  We plan on at least one event a month.  If you would like to receive information about each Hangout event, please see Mrs. Holtrop in s109 or email at gholtrop@d230.org.

Last year our Model UN team did a great job posing as Italy during the UCNUM.  They spent four days and three nights discussing important global issues, and they even met a representative from the consulate and learned many interesting facts about the country and their stand on birth rates, global warming and other important global issues.

The committee members for the Relay for Life event went well above and beyond last year, helping the district raise $350,000 for cancer research.  The committee worked tirelessly, and the overnight event was a blast. They are already making plans for this year. Watch for more information coming soon on how you can become part of this nationally recognized event.

Student Council never seems to take a break. It meets every Thursday either before school at 7:30 a.m. or after school at 3:30 p.m. in 338. Students representing all the clubs at Andrew came out Sunday, September 15 to decorate and set the stage for a wonderful Homecoming week. Student Council membership is 100 strong and growing...but they are always looking for more. With upcoming events like the popular Veteran’s Week, Just Dance, Food Drives, and more, they have something for every student interested in getting involved.

Chess got started the end of September. Practices are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday after school from 3-4. Competitions include SWSC matches and Saturday tournaments. The chess season culminates in the IHSA state tournament in February, which is one of the largest chess tournaments in the USA. With an exciting end of the season finish last year, the team is anxious to pick up where it left off.

German Club has an exciting semester planned. The club will hold the Oktoberfest party on  September 25. Why would Oktoberfest be in September, you might ask? In Germany, Oktoberfest ends on the first Sunday in October. This year, Oktoberfest takes place in Munich, Germany from September 21 to October 6. German Club is currently still taking members. You do not have to be in a German class to participate in German Club. If you have an interest in the German culture, come join German Club at Andrew with its 80+ members. This semester we will also be taking a restaurant trip, making gingerbread houses, decorating Christmas trees & much more. Komm!  Mach mit!

Variety Show The History of Rock & Roll: Part 22 will be holding tryouts on Sunday October 27 beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the main gym.  Student should be on the lookout for more information posted in the hallways or see Mrs. Mattix in room 357 with questions.

Here that Thunder?! T-Bolt Storm is already reflecting this year’s school theme “See the lightning. Be the thunder!” They are already over 100 members strong, and have been recruiting members with visits to freshmen and sophomore advisories. They have a great group of returning upperclassmen, who have already made their mark at the first home football game and showed their great support of our military and Andrew football at the Armed Forces game at Sandburg. But look out -- we have the largest number of freshmen ever signed up to be part of “The Storm.”  We can hear the thunder...and it’s getting louder.
