Hot Hot Heat: Surviving Triple Digit Temps

Since temperatures are expected to reach—and surpass—100 degrees Thursday, village officials are reminding residents to stay indoors as much as possible and check on friends and relatives. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory.

If you've been complaining about the early summertime 90-degree temperatures, you may want to bite your tongue.

Meteorologists are predicting even more of a warm-up Thursday and the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for and the surrounding areas. Temperatures are expected to climb to between 100 and 105 degrees at the day's heat peek, according to the alert, which lasts from noon to 8 p.m. 

Heat index readings will likely soar between 105 and 110 degrees.

Officials from the  are advising residents to stay indoors in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible, drink plenty of fluids, avoid strenuous exercise, wear loose-fitting clothing and check on friends and relatives—particularly the elderly.

They also ask that residents mind the dangers of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and an inadequate replacement of fluids. Heat stroke is more serious, occurring when the body is unable to regulate itself. Those suffering from symptoms of either should call 911.

"Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," a village news release said. "During hot weather, the car interior can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."

Those seeking refuge from the heat can visit the Senior Community Center at 17355 68th Court throughout the day. Elderly residents and those with special needs may register for well-being checks by calling 708-444-5326.
