National Weather Service and Village of Tinley Park Issue High Wind Warning

Secure all Halloween decorations because high winds are on their way, officials said.

Get out the candles and flashlights, and remove any potential flying projectiles from your porch and yard.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for Cook County in effect from 3 p.m. Wednesday to 3 p.m. Thursday. The is on standby to monitor changing weather conditions, according to a community-wide alert sent by village officials this morning.

Residents should expect high winds of at least 40 mph and gusts of 58 mph or more that can lead to property damage, downed tree limbs and power lines. The strong winds can also make driving difficult. Winds will be moving in a north to northeast direction.

"All outdoor furniture, trash cans, Halloween decorations and other loose outside objects should be secured to prevent possible damage and injuries," the village alert said. "Residents should avoid driving high profile vehicles such as motor homes and tractor trailers."

The National Weather Service says the potentially damaging winds will likely pick up late this afternoon through tonight, and possibly linger into early Thursday morning.

The strongest winds are likely to occur near Lake Michigan.
