There's Snow Time Like the Present to Prepare for Winter's Fury

Here's a rundown of how the plowing works in Tinley, including which local roads are cleared by the village and which are under the jurisdiction of other municipalities. We're also including important safety tips.

Our winter has been mild so far, but that's expected to change today. Here are some important reminders to keep your snowy season safe:

  • When shoveling or blowing snow, keep in mind that a ordinance prohibits you from putting it on the street. If you do so and cause an accident, you could be liable.
  • For other safety reasons, do not stack snow around fire hydrants or on sidewalks.
  • The village's plowing plan goes into effect after a 1-inch accumulation of snow. Remember that cars are not allowed to be parked on the street at that time and garbage cans and recycling bins are not to be left in the roadway.
  • During a snowfall, all streets receive two passes down the center. After the entire route has been run and the snow has finished falling, the plows return to clean the streets curb to curb.
  • The village has contracted for additional help to plow cul-de-sacs. These plows will be dispatched to cul-de-sacs after two inches of snow has fallen, which will result in a speedier response to these areas in town.
  • Ensure that your mailbox meets U.S. Postal Service requirements. The post must be firmly set in the ground and not cracked, rotted or rusted. It must be attached securely to the post. The village is not responsible for a mailbox damaged by a snow plow if it doesn't meet these requirements.
