Community Corner

Women Uniting for Change

South-Southwest Suburban United Way and Professional Women's Network are hosting their Women Uniting for Change Networking Event on Thursday, Oct. 14.

The event, sponsored by BankFinancial, will bring together businesswomen, elected officials, and community leaders to network and learn about programs that are transforming the lives of women in the Southland.

Representatives from United Way funded agencies YWCA, Girl Scouts, and South Suburban Family Shelter will be highlighting their programs that promote financial empowerment and education for women and girls.

Vicki Meilach, Outreach Coordinator for South Suburban Family Shelter, will be co-presenting with the Project RENEW Case Manager.   "SSFS offers comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence and Project RENEW is one of these programs.  We educate clients about personal finances and assist them in attaining financial empowerment," said Meilach.  "This event will help women understand the need for economic empowerment programs and what resources are available within the community."

The event will recognize local elected officials who have been champions of women's issues.  Those recognized will be U.S. Rep. Judy Biggert, Cook Country Board President Candidate Toni Preckwinkle, state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, State Treasurer Candidate Robin Kelly, and Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce Chairman Maureen Kelly.

Attendees will hear how they can get more involved in their community through South-Southwest Suburban United Way's Women's Leadership Council.  The mission of the council is to empower Southland women to bring about meaningful change in their community.  Members of the council will learn from a leading social service organization about key issues impacting the community, connect with key women business and community leaders to solve problems facing the region, and also receive recognition as a leader of change in the Southland area.

Women who are interested in joining WLC are encouraged to visit the United Way website for more information.

The free event begins with appetizers, cocktails and networking at 6 p.m. and concludes with door prize raffles at 8 p.m.  There will be a short presentation at 7 p.m.
