Local Parish to 'Salute' Veterans With Sunday Picnic
Veterans are invited to eat free at a parish fundraiser.
Just because fall is officially here doesn't mean picnics are hibernating until spring.
Members of are inviting residents and others to the church hall this Sunday for their to honor U.S. military veterans with food, fun and fundraising.
This is the third year for the event, which runs 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the , 7399 W. 159th St. In the past, it raised money for the Honor Flight Network, said Merilee Andreasen, parish secretary.

This year, all proceeds will go toward a planned local site that will honor veterans. Village trustees decided earlier this month to set aside $100,000 in grant money for the project, which doesn't have a formal name but has been referred to as the "Tinley Park Veterans Memorial Parkway," officials said.

Andreason, whose cousin, father, brother and husband served in the U.S. Navy, said the picnic is a time to honor those who fight for their country.
“(Veterans) have given so much for us,” she said. “How many of us even think of them in our day-to-day life?”
Vets eat free at the event, which will feature home cooked side dishes and desserts, Andreason said.
There will also be a prize for the youngest veteran attending, oldest veteran, and the veteran with the longest service, she added.
About 100 to 150 veterans are expected to attend the event, Andreason said.
