Bankers Report a Missing Cash Stash

Tinley Park police said an employee may have stolen from a local bank.

A manager of a local bank said Tuesday that he discovered that about $12,000 was missing from a cash drawer.

Staff members at First Midwest Bank, 16700 S. 80th Ave., called around 10 a.m. to report the theft. They suspected that an employee might be responsible, according to the police report.

The manager of the branch said he did an audit of an employee's bank drawer Tuesday and realized that $12,000 was unaccounted for. The drawer was supposed to have $17,460 in it, according to bank records that were entered on Monday by an employee. About $5,460 was in the drawer on Tuesday, the manager said.

The manager noted that the drawers are kept in a vault while they're not being used. The last day the drawer in question had been audited was May 3, and the money could have disappeared anytime since then.

The bank is reviewing video surveillance of employees' activities, police said. The person who typically manages the drawer told the cops she didn't know anything about the missing stash.
