Candy, Gatorade and Copper Thief Reportedly Hits Vogt Street Home

Residents reported some peculiar items missing from their Tinley house last week.

A burglar snatched copper pipe, candy and Gatorade from a home last week where neighbors said they saw a man with a backpack lurking.

Police went to a house in the 6500 block of West Vogt Street on Thursday around 6:30 p.m. after its residents noticed that furniture had been moved and a security bar was lifted from a sliding door, according to the police report.

A resident said she found one copper pipe in the home’s basement had been torn off and another, bent.

“The folding chairs in the living room were moved against the wall apart from one another,” the report said. “… She noticed all the candy in the refrigerator was gone and two bottles of Gatorade Propel were empty.”

No one in the home ate the candy or drank the Propel, residents said, in the report. Police said the burglar might have got into the house through an east basement window because it was the only unsecured entrance.

Investigators were able to pull two sets of fingerprints off the bent pipe and also asked neighbors if they saw anything suspicious between 6 a.m. June 21 and 8 a.m. June 22 — when residents believe the thief broke in.

A husband and wife living nearby said that in that time frame, they saw a slim, 6-foot-tall man wearing a tan shirt, blue jeans and a black backpack hanging around the house.

The man tried to get into the home and the couple called the police, they said. A suspect has been identified, according to the report, but charges had not yet been filed early Monday.
