Christmas Donations Missing From Local Church

Tinley Park police said someone stole a heavily secured stash of cash from a local church.

Thieves recently targeted a local church's holiday donations, which were stowed away beyond several locked doors.

were called around 3:15 p.m. Jan. 4 to Standing Stones Church, 16250 84th Ave., , where they investigated several missing envelopes that had been placed in the Christmas offering.

The envelopes were reportedly stolen from a locked filing cabinet at the church. They were placed there Dec. 11, 2011, and are often mostly cash, according to the report. The exact total of the missing money is unknown.

The locked cabinet in which the envelopes were placed was in a locked room in the center of the building. The door to the room is also usually locked and the key to that door and cabinet is located in a locked drawer of the secretary's office. The door to the secretary's office is usually locked. The key to the secretary's drawer is also locked in a locked closet in the secretary's office, according to the report. 

Also discovered missing was a Canon GL2 Mini DV camcorder. It was bought about five years ago for $5,000, police said. The camera was last seen Dec. 3, 2011.

On the second floor of the building in the school area, $50 was reported missing from a zipper pouch.

There were no signs of forced entry and surveillance wasn't working at the time of the thefts. The case remained under investigation Friday.
