Cops: Drunken Man Tries Biting Hospital Staff

Police said a driver who was taken to an Oak Lawn hospital following a one-car accident that landed his vehicle on a Tinley sidewalk was less than cooperative with medical professionals.

charged a man with last week after he reportedly drove his vehicle off the roadway, leaving damaged trees and mailboxes in his wake. 

Officers also said that Scott R. Rooney, 23, of the 8500 block of Westberry Lane in , became combative with staff at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was taken for medical treatment.

It all started around 1:20 a.m. March 28 when police were dispatched to the 8000 block of West 160th Street for a report of a one-car accident. There, they reportedly found Rooney in the driver's seat of his Mini Cooper talking on his cell phone. He had an abrasion near his eye and blood around his mouth, according to the report.

"(An officer) approached Rooney and asked him several times if he was OK, but he continued with his phone call and did not answer … " the report said. " … (The officer) asked him for his driver's license several times and was given a receipt from the Mini Cooper dealership." 

Police said Rooney's vehicle was heading westbound on 160th Street when it left the south side of the roadway, struck at least one mailbox—possibly two—and three trees before coming to rest on the sidewalk in front of 8035 W. 160th St.

After seeing he was wounded, paramedics took Rooney to get medical treatment. He agreed to give a blood and urine sample, police said, but was not cooperative with medical professionals. 

"Rooney was being loud, obnoxious, using profanity and was attempting to kick and bite hospital staff while in the emergency room being treated," the report said. "Hospital staff needed to use restraints tied to the hospital bed on Rooney to prevent him from injuring himself or hospital staff."

Several tests were done to determine Rooney's injuries, police said. The report states that he was not released until the afternoon because of his level of intoxication. 

He was charged with improper lane use, driving under the influence of alcohol and damaging village property.
