Drunken Driver Levels Mailbox in Front of Cops, Police Say

Police went looking for a possible drunken driver this month, only to find him leveling a mailbox in his neighborhood, according to reports.

While following a possible intoxicated driver on Paxton Avenue earlier this month, a l officer reportedly saw him swerve off the roadway, strike a mailbox, and swerve back onto the roadway. 

Police said they'd received a report of a possible drunken driver around 7:50 p.m. Aug. 14 on northbound 80th Avenue from 171st Street. They looked up the license plate for the vehicle and found that it was registered to someone in the 16700 block of Paxton Avenue in , they said.

An officer began driving to that residence, the report said, and upon turning on Paxton, saw Jud J. Reidy driving wildly toward the cop car, the report said. That's when he allegedly drove off the roadway after striking the curb and driving straight over a mailbox.  

" … Reidy asked why he was being pulled over and I told him that he just struck his neighbor's mailbox," the report said. " … Reidy said he had been golfing and then had gone to Fox's in Mokena for pizza and beers."

He reportedly failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the Tinley Park Police Department. He was charged with improper lane use, failure to give information after damaging property and driving under the influence of alcohol.
