Guns, WWII Memorabilia, Jewelry Stolen from Tinley Home

The man charged with the crime had been living with the homeowners for more than two years.

A 20-year-old firefighter from Ireland was charged with stealing a Nazi field surgeon's knife, World War II-era service revolvers, an antique wedding ring and other valuables from the family he had been staying with for more than two years, Tinley Park police said.

The burglary took place over Labor Day weekend, between 3 p.m. Sept. 4 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6, while the owners of the home on the 6900 block of Charnswood Drive were out of town, police said. Police found no signs of forced entry.

East Hazel Crest firefighter Cian O'Flaherty, 20, who had been living with the homeowners since his parents returned to Ireland two-and-a-half years ago, was arrested on Sept. 8 and charged with theft between $300 and $10,000 in value.

As of Sept. 13, O'Flaherty was in custody at the Cook County Jail in Chicago, according to the office of the Cook County Circuit Court Clerk. His next court date is Sept. 28.

  • A Nazi field surgeon's knife and sheath from World War II. The blade is 18 to 24 inches long and made of stainless steel with the Nazi swastika inlaid on the handle. It is saw-toothed on one side for cutting bone and sharpened on the other side for soft tissue.
  • A Nazi ceremonial dagger and sheath from World War II. The blade is 8 to 10 inches long with the Nazi swastika inlaid on the dagger.
  • A U.S. Army-issue .45 Colt service revolver.
  • A German Luger 9mm pistol.
  • A .38 special snub-nosed Smith & Wesson police revolver with 2-inch barrel and holster.
  • A Derringer-type two-shot .22 pistol with pearl handles.
  • A 60-year-old white gold wedding right with four large diamonds on top and six to eight smaller diamonds on the sides. It had recently been appraised at $6,400.
  • $330 worth of cash and coins from two ceramic piggy banks.

The victims did not have the guns' serial numbers and the ring was uninsured.
