A Mokena man facing aggravated battery and great bodily harm charges after allegedly assaulting a Tinley Park restaurant manager is claiming self defense, according to his attorney.
Dennis Dwyer told Judge Colleen Hyland Tuesday during a Bridgeview courtroom hearing that his client, Donovan Campbell, 42, will be asserting self defense. Dwyer will be introducing a witness, he said, later declining to specify who it may be.
During the March 18, 2011, incident, Campbell reportedly became upset over his bill at . Donovan slapped the manager in the face and punched his chest when asked to leave, police said. Witnesses told police that Campbell then put the 55-year-old manager in a choke hold and wrestled him to the ground. Restaurant employees eventually freed their boss and restrained Campbell until police arrived.
The manager was taken to Palos Community Hospital complaining of chest pains and later transferred to Christ Medical Center. He suffered eight broken ribs and a collapsed lung, police said.
Donovan is expected back in court on Aug. 30.
