Marine, Army Vets Argue in Spin Class; Burglars in Downtown Metra Lot

Also in today's reports, a school custodian steals a cell phone and flushes its SIM card down the toilet, and a reported drunken driver tells the cops he was only drinking water. Today's blotter stems from Aril 15, 18, 19 and 24.

TUESDAY, APRIL 24

Warrant Arrests

Sydney L. Brown, 22, of the 9300 block of Hunter Drive in Orland Hills, was arrested at an unspecified time at the Orland Hills Police Department on a failure-to-appear warrant out of for driving under the influence. Her bail was set at $25,000.

Custodian Snags Cell Phone, Flushes Data Card

Police said a custodian at Andrew High School, 9001 West 171st St., , admitted to stealing a student's cell phone from a locker around 8:30 a.m. The custodian was spotted in the vicinity of the phone, which was in an open locker near the gymnasium. He took it, he said, removed and flushed its data card down the toilet and hid the phone behind a vending machine for later retrieval. The student's father didn't want to sign complaints. The phone was returned. 

Marine and Army Veteran Argue During Spin Class

said they were called to LA Fitness, 18400 Convention Center Drive in around 11 a.m., just as a spin class was concluding there. Two men in their 50s were reportedly arguing during the class.

One, a U.S. Marine veteran, said the other, a U.S. Army veteran, was teasing him. The Marine said he began to take the comments personally and asked the instructor to request that the Army veteran stop. The Army veteran then left the premises. He later told police the Marine made a "pistol" sign with his hands paired with a shooting gesture in his direction and he was, "unsure why he was directing aggression" his way.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18

Burglars Strike Downtown Metra Lot

Officers were called to all-day parking near the downtown train station last week, where two burglars smashed a car window, grabbed a bag and ran.

They were told by a witness who was walking her dogs that the pair—dressed in all black during broad daylight—was headed east on 174th Street. The woman said that around 9:45 a.m., she saw the two break the window of a silver Lexus that was parked in the lot, 6679 South St.

"There were several dent marks just below (the car's) door handle on the metal frame above the window," the police report said.

Officers had not made any arrests in connection with the incident as of April 24.

SUNDAY, APRIL 15

Drunken Driver Tells Police it Was Just Water

When police pulled over a suspected drunken driver earlier this month who they said was cruising through downtown , driving over lane lines and nearly hitting light poles, they were reportedly told he'd only been drinking water during the night.

Officers stopped Jason E. Zednick, 42, of the 6500 block of West 173rd Street in , around 1 a.m. near the intersection of Oak Park Avenue and 176th Street. They said they saw him drive as much as 2 feet over the street's center median, jerk his car back into the lane and in doing so, barely missing a light pole in the 17600 block of Oak Park Avenue. 

"I asked Jason where he was driving from and he said 'home,'" the report said. "I observed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath and his speech slurred. … I asked Jason if he had been drinking tonight and he stated, 'no just water.'" 

He reportedly failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. He refused to give a breath sample while at the . He was charged with improper lane use and driving under the influence.
