Medical Examiner Identifies Train Accident Victim as Middle-Aged Tinley Man

Authorities have successfully identified the body of a man who was killed this week by a passenger train.

 who was walking near the , authorities have identified the victim as a 47-year-old resident, authorities said.

Joseph S. Gill, of the 6600 block of 177th Street, was killed around 12:10 a.m. Monday, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Authorities initially believed the victim — who was a "John Doe" until this evening — was in his 30s.

Metra Spokeswoman Meg Reile has said Gill was walking southbound along the railroad tracks near the 6700 block of South Street .

The engineer sounded his horn and applied the brakes.

He told police he believed Gill tried darting out of the way at the last minute, Reile said.

The train was scheduled to arrive in Joliet at 12:40 a.m. It was the last outbound train on the Rock Island Line.
