Police Blotter: Attempted Scooter Theft; Briefcase Snatched from Car

WEDNESDAY, JULY 13

Bicycle Nabbed from Open Garage

A 19-year-old man called the cops around 2:30 p.m. when he noticed that his Schwinn bicycle was missing from his open garage in the 7900 block of West 163rd Place in Tinley Park. He said he believed someone stole the bike between about 6 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Window Shattered

A 54-year-old woman, whose 2000 Dodge van was parked in the 16700 block of 82nd Avenue in Tinley Park, called police to report that sometime between 8 p.m. July 12 and 5:45 a.m. July 13, someone shattered the back, driver's side window of her vehicle.

PayPal Fraud

A Tinley Park woman said someone transferred $168.49 from her checking account to a PayPal account without her permission. The 58-year-old woman said she doesn't have a PayPal account and didn't make a purchase using it.

Attempted Scooter Theft

Police arrested Arnold D. Wheeler, 21, of the 15800 block of LaClaire Avenue in Oak Forest, around 3:30 p.m. They were called to Super K-Mart, 16300 Harlem Ave., where loss prevention officers said they saw Wheeler push a shopping cart into the sporting goods section, grab an E-Zip brand electric motor scooter valued at $199.99, and place it in his cart. "Wheeler then pushed the shopping cart up to the service desk and told the service desk employee … he would like a refund on the electric power scooter …" the report said. "Wheeler produced a Super K-Mart receipt dated July 9 in the amount of $216.99 for an electric scooter." The employee gave Wheeler the full cash refund, police said, and Wheeler was arrested and charged with retail theft.

Stolen Bike

A 44-year-old Mokena man called police around 2 p.m. after he said his bike had been stolen from the front of the Tinley Park Library, 7851 W. Timber Drive. He left his bicycle unattended and unlocked for about 30 minutes between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., police said.

SATURDAY, JULY 9

Briefcase Snatched From Car

A 47-year-old man said someone broke in to his possibly unlocked Mercedes while it was parked in the lot at Sam's Club, 16100 S. Harlem Ave., in Tinley Park. Missing was his briefcase, which had in it his personal checkbook, a planner, a couple of uncashed paychecks, keys and various business documents, the report said. He said someone snagged the bag between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Battery

Eugene E. Scott, 46, of the 6800 block of Mirmar Lane in Palmdale, Calif., was arrested around 5 p.m. in the 19100 block of South Ridgeland Avenue in Tinley Park and charged with battery. His bail was set at $1,000.
