Police Blotter: Man Punches Window at Hollstein's; Thief Targets Break Room

SATURDAY, NOV. 19

Man Punches Window at Hollstein's

Police arrested Owen P. Gerig, 28, of the 7000 block of West 183rd Street in , around 1:50 am. They said they were dispatched to J. W. Hollstein's, 17358 Oak Park Ave., at 1:38 a.m., when Gerig reportedly punched a glass window pane in the door before leaving. The glass broke and police asked people in the bar if they knew the culprit. Those patrons directed officers to Gerig, who was found outside his car about 10 minutes later. 

While being processed on a criminal damage to property charge, police said they found 5.1 grams of marijuana in the pocket of Gerig's sweatshirt. He was additionally charged with possession of more than 2.5 grams but less than 10 grams of marijuana.

THURSDAY, NOV. 17

Wallet Stolen From Woman's Work

An employee at CarMax, 18800 S. Oak Park Ave., Tinley Park, called police to report that sometime between 10:20 a.m. and 7 p.m., someone stole her wallet from her office. The wallet contained her driver's license, state identification, Blue Cross Blue Shield card, checkbook, $100 cash, debit card, Visa card, MasterCard and Target card. The victim canceled all her cards and police are investigating. Video surveillance of the area may be available.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 16

Resisting a Peace Officer

William J. Weaver, 25, of the 16100 block of Have Avenue in Orland Hills was arrested around 6 p.m. at an unspecified location and charged with battery and resisting a peace officer. His bail was set at $1,500 and additional information wasn't immediately available. 

Damaged Gate

Police were called around 1:30 p.m. to Cavallini's banquet hall, 6700 W. South St., Tinley Park, for a report of a damaged gate door. The door faces south and is part of a walled fence around utility equipment at the business. While an employee of the business said she believed someone had kicked the door, police said it looked like someone had struck it with a vehicle or that it had been damaged by the wind. After reviewing surveillance footage, they found nothing suspicious. 

Telephone Harassment

A woman contacted police after she received a suspicious phone call around 1:10 p.m. from someone who said they were with the "Illinois Department of Moving," according to the police report. The caller asked the woman for information about her business and when she refused, the caller swore at her and called her names. The woman said she has received similar calls over the past several months. 

Thief Targets Break Room

Police made several reports over the past week regarding thefts in the break room at Dick's Sporting Goods, 7370 191st St., Tinley Park. One employee had $13 stolen from her wallet—it was locked and in a locker—on Nov. 16 between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. In another report made that day, an employee said that on Nov. 11, someone stole $40 from her purse, which was also secured in a locker. A third report said that on Nov. 12, a woman had $20 in cash and an iPod touch taken from her purse. The third woman's purse was left sitting under her jacket in the room, she said. 

SUNDAY, SEPT. 18

Ring Stolen

A couple went to the around 9 p.m. Sept. 18 to report that a white gold ring containing four small diamonds was missing from their apartment on Olcott Avenue in Tinley Park. The ring was the only thing stolen and was taken from a jewelry stand on the woman's dresser.
