Police: Dunkin Donuts Employee Snagged Thousands

Police arrested a 50-year-old Orland Park man who they said had been stealing from his work, a local doughnut shop, for more than a year. 

Yashes B. Amin, of the 9100 block of Boardwalk Terrace in Orland Park, was arrested Aug. 2 and charged with one felony count of theft. said that between May 2011 and June 1, he'd stolen at least $1,596.81 in cash from the Dunkin Donuts store he managed at 9510 179th St. in . He had been employed by Dunkin Donuts since 2008, but came to the local store as a manager on May 21, 2011, according to the police report.

"(Amin) contacted (his boss) on July 21, 2012, advising that (his) brother was suffering from a gunshot wound and he needed to leave the store," the report said. 

The district manager of the branch showed police several receipts and invoices indicating discrepancies in the cash drop and money being paid using Amin's manager card, the report said. Police also watched surveillance footage of Amin collecting some of the cash, they said. Additional investigation reportedly showed that Amin took $1,626.26 from June 4 to July 21. 

During questioning, Amin admitted to stealing money from the store but told police it was only a "couple hundred dollars," according to the report. 

"I advised Amin that I had a collection of receipts that showed he took $1,210.79 over the past two months alone, not including a missing morning store drop," an officer wrote, in the report. "He replied, 'three to four hundred maybe,' but 'no way $1,000. I can't argue it, I can't pay it, I have no means to pay it all in one goal.'" 

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved felony charges.
