UPDATE: Police Find Missing Woman Wandering Highway in Matteson

Tinley officers asked residents for help earlier locating a dementia patient who went missing early this morning. They found her around 1 p.m., they said.

 found a local woman wandering a highway in Matteson this afternoon after she went missing early this morning from her home in the 19100 block of Ridgeland Avenue.

The woman was walking along the side of Route 30 near its intersection with Governors Highway in Matteson,  Police Cmndr. Steve Vaccaro said around 1:20 p.m. She was unharmed.

Officers issued an alert more than an hour earlier asking residents to help find the woman, who disappeared from her home as early as 6 a.m. The 58-year-old suffers from dementia and doesn't drive or carry a cell phone, patrol officer Kevin Horbaczewski said minutes after the alert was issued.

"She walked out through the overhead garage door," Horbaczewski said, noting that she left from her home in the Odyssey Country Club subdivision. "She was last seen wearing black pants and a pink and white striped shirt."

The woman has a caregiver who wasn't expected to show up until later in the day, so her husband stopped home during a break from work to check on her. That's when he found out she'd left.
