Police: Man Kicks, Thrashes and Spits in Lockup

Police arrested a man earlier this summer who they said they had to place a spit shield on in a holding cell. He was highly intoxicated, according to reports, and eventually hospitalized.

A 20-year-old man who was banished this summer from a local concert venue for reportedly shoving a woman proceeded to kick officers, spit on them and violently thrash in the back of their squad car while being arrested, according to the police report.

Tinley Park police officers arrested Timothy R. Gibson, of the 11800 block of Chisholm Trail in Orland Park around 7:15 p.m. July 27 at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre on Ridgeland Avenue in . Security had already "evicted" Gibson from the theater twice, the report said, and asked that he be arrested for criminal trespassing while trying to enter a third time.

Police cuffed Gibson and placed him in the squad car. They had to stop the car at Oak Park Avenue and West Point drive, "due to Gibson striking the back of my seat and kicking the rear, driver's side door," one officer wrote.

"At the , Gibson was brought into lockup where he began to thrash his body violently, attempting to free himself from his handcuffs," police said. "While myself and other officers who were already back in the lockup area attempted to restrain Gibson, he began to repeatedly kick myself and the other officers in the legs."

He was placed in a "bullpen cell," officers said, and then began spitting at officers through the cage and banging his head against the wall.

"Myself and other officers re-entered the holding cell and placed a spit shield on his head and handcuffed Gibson to the bench to prevent him from causing further injury to himself," the report said.

Gibson was taken to Advocate South Suburban Hospital "for his level of intoxication" where hospital staff had to restrain him to the bed, police said. His parents then went to the hospital so they could retrieve him once he became sober, police said. He was charged with battery to a police officer and criminal trespassing.
