Police Reportedly Find 'Nervous Driver' With 9MM Ruger Handgun

A Chicago man who was cruising through on Sunday was accused of illegally having a handgun and ammo stash in his trunk.

pulled over Henry T. Shelton, 22, of the 500 block of West 120th Street in Chicago around 9:50 p.m. that night, near the intersection of 159th Street and 78th Avenue after noticing that he had a tinted license plate cover, according to the report.

Officers said Shelton was "visibly nervous," and was "looking under his floor mats" and moving things around when asked to present his insurance card.

"Based on the suspect's behavior, the responding officer asked if he had any illegal items in the vehicle which he advised he did not," the report said. 

Shelton was asked to step out of the car and complied with a search. Officers found in the trunk a gray Ruger case with a broken seal, the report said. In it was a Ruger P95 9MM pistol with two magazines and a bag with a box of 50 9MM bullets and a 32-round Ruger magazine, according to the report.

Shelton does not have a valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card, police noted.

" … When (an officer) opened the trunk the suspect became even more nervous and had a frightened facial expression," the report said. "Suspect spontaneously advised, 'I know what's there.'"

Shelton's infant daughter was asleep in the vehicle in a carrier which was not belted in, officer said. Her mother came to the scene to retrieve her.

Shelton told police he bought the gun from Cabela's but declined to say anything else, the report said. He had a Cabela's receipt in his pocket that was dated Feb. 5, according to police. 

Shelton was charged with possession of ammunition without a FOID card and possession of a firearm without a FOID card. His bail was set at $1,500.
