Recent Tobacco Sales Sting Nets Five

Officers sent an underaged teen into five convenience stores last week to buy cigarettes. Among store clerks issued violations was one at Tinley Family Food and Liquor, which recently had a liquor citation.

embarked on a local sting last week in which they cited five store clerks for violating the village's tobacco ordinance.

The clerks all sold a pack of smokes to a 17-year-old boy, according to the police reports. The customer reportedly wasn't asked for his identification or his age.

Among employees cited was a 46-year-old Country Club Hills woman, who allegedly sold a pack of Newport cigarettes to the underage teen around 8 p.m. Feb. 29. She was working at Tinley Family Food and Liquor, 6800 183rd St., formerly known as Tinley 24/Seven.

The store has a checkered history that includes several liquor sales violations, the most recent of which occurred in Nov. 2011. Its license was previously suspended about eight months before that when it was under a different ownership, police have said.

All four of the other violations were issued Feb. 28.

One was to a 33-year-old Markham man who was working at Circle K, 8401 W. 159th St. A second was to a 61-year-old man who reportedly sold smokes to the teenaged boy from behind the counter at E&B Liquors, 17329 Oak Park Ave. A 21-year-old Jewel-Osco clerk was also cited, along with a 45-year-old employee at 7-Eleven, 16658 Oak Park Ave.

All five of the store clerks are due in court later this month.
