South Suburban DUI Arrests, Oct. 13

A careless smoker recently did more than just damage his lungs while driving. Read what happened in this week's roundup of DUI reports from the Southland.

Oct. 4: Tuanja Caruth, 52, of the 600 block of West Washington, Alhambra, CA, was charged with driving under the influence, speeding and disobeying a traffic control device, according to a New Lenox police report. Police reported seeing a speeding car disobey a traffic control signal at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 30 and Vine. Cops found that the driver, Caruth, was under the influence after a traffic stop was performed. Caruth posted bond and was released.

Sept. 30: James T. Sweeney, Jr., 33, of the 300 block of Hancock Drive, New Lenox, was charged with driving under the influence, according to a report. Sweeney was stopped at about 3:36 a.m. near the intersection of Cedar Road and Maple. Police allegedly found that he was under the influence. Sweeney posted bond and was released.

PALOS HEIGHTS

Oct. 4: A speedy driver from Palos Heights failed sobriety tests during a recent traffic stop, according to a report.

Michael C. Haverty, 25, of the 12600 block of South Parkside, Palos Heights, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08 and speeding, according to Palos Heights police. Cops stopped Haverty at about 3:25 a.m. in the 12500 block of South Harlem Avenue for speeding, the report states. After speaking with the driver, police noticed signs that he had been drinking.

Haverty failed tests for sobriety he was asked to perform, the report states. He was arrested and booked at the Palos Heights Police Department. The driver was later released on $1,000 bond. Haverty is due on Oct. 22 in Bridgeview court.


ORLAND PARK

Sept. 8: An Orland Park man accused of drunken driving told police he looked away from the road to get a smoke before running into a truck.

Brendan A. Greene, 24, of the 11700 block of Springbrook Court, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI with a blood-alcohol level greater than 0.08, failing to slow down to avoid a crash and improper lane use, according to an Orland Park police report. Police were called at about 1:11 a.m. to the 14900 block of Highland Avenue for a traffic crash investigation, the report states. The driver of a blue car, Greene, was the only person at the crash. He told an officer that he was reaching down to the passenger side of his car to retrieve a cigarette when he veered left and hit an unoccupied red Chevy Silverado parked on the street.

Greene admitted to cops that he drank six beers and two shots before driving, the report states. He face appeared red and he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. An officer had Greene perform tests for sobriety, the report states. During tests, he had to steady himself and nearly fell over. Police placed him under arrest after he failed the tests. Green is due on Oct. 3 in Bridgeview court.
