Tinley's Police Drug Dog Helps Find 34 Bags of Weed During Pullover

Police arrested two men Tuesday night believed to be selling pot out of a trunk.

The 's drug dog helped officers find more than 20 grams of marijuana Tuesday evening during a traffic stop in the 6200 block of 175th Street.

David Q. Martin, 18, of the 16900 block of Old Elm Drive in Country Club Hills and Cornelius N. White, 19, of the 17700 block of Grandview Drive in Hazel Crest were both arrested. Martin was driving a 1998 Grand Prix car around 10:10 p.m. when police pulled over the vehicle because it was missing a headlight, according to the report. White was in the front passenger seat.

When the officer "smelled a strong odor of cannabis" in the car, he called the department's K-9, Thor, and his handler for backup.

Thor was directed to search the outside of the vehicle, police said, and soon began scratching at the trunk.

"While Thor was scratching the trunk of the vehicle, I noticed David's demeanor change rapidly," the officer wrote in the report. "I asked David if he had anything in his trunk. David stated verbatim, 'Man I have no idea, my sister drives this car, too.'"

Police found two clear sandwich bags containing 34 individual bags of marijuana, according to the report. In a later written statement, White said he placed the weed in Martin's car when he picked him up.

"Cornelius stated that he has been selling cannabis for approximately two months and sells the bags for $10 a piece," the report said.

Martin didn't make a statement and deferred to a lawyer.

The pot weighed a total of 21 grams, according to the report. Neither man was carrying a wallet but White was found with $115 in cash and Cornelius, $24, police noted.

White was charged with one felony count of unlawful delivery of cannabis. Martin was charged with the same, along with driving a vehicle that had only one headlight and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

White was arrested in 2008 and charged with battery, police records show. Martin was arrested in 2010 and charged with robbery.
