The motorcycle driver was hospitalized Saturday, and the fatal accident also shut down all westbound lanes of the interstate at Harlem Avenue, according to state police.

A woman was killed Saturday when the motorcycle she was a passenger on struck a semi-truck getting on to westbound 1-80, according to Illinois State Police.

The motorcycle's driver was injured and taken to a local hospital said State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera. The truck driver did not sustain any injuries, he added.

The accident, which happened around 6:24 p.m., shut down all westbound lanes of 1-80 at Harlem Avenue, Rivera said. At least one lane would be open by about 9 p.m. Saturday, July 13, he said, adding that state police investigators were still taking a look at the scene.

According to preliminary information from the scene, a semi-truck traveling in the far right lane of westbound 1-80 hit a motorcycle carrying a driver and a passenger as it entered the interstate from the southbound Harlem Avenue ramp, Rivera said.

It is not yet known if the driver misjudged his speed or the distance, but his motorcycle struck the right, front corner of the semi, and the motorcycle driver lost control, he added.

It is not known if any charges will be filed, Rivera said.
